JC slam, no more ribcage, poetry slam

grassroots community space, friday jan 7,  9pm - 12 am

The JC Slam is the only PSI sanctioned and nationally recognized slam in North Jersey. That means the stakes are high because we are trying to find out who will represent Jersey City at the 2011 National Poetry Slam.

There is a brief OPEN-MIC before the slam that not only welcomes aspiring poets but MUSICIANS AND COMICS AS WELL.

Hosted by the man who played the role of Santa's helper and the New Years Baby, Broken English.
...
After a holiday hiatus, we're back! We're starting off the New Year with the No More Rib Cage Tour paying us a visit all the way up from New England.

SO, WHY NO MORE RIBCAGE?

These four kids tossed the ribcage out the window (as should everybody who’s still saying “ribcage” in their poems) and are ready to get down to the real talk. Hailing from the legendary North[[b]]east poetry community with pedigrees from all stripes of basement bar open mics and coffee shop love/hate fests, they are ready and willing to make you laugh, cry, gasp, choke, grin, curse, and high-five all over the damn place. Just let them know the where and the when, and they will bring the rumpus. Along with anything else that will fit in Sam’s ugly-yet-reliable car when they hit the road this winter on a tour of the East Coast.

Cassandra de Alba is poet from New Hampshire who attends Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, which confuses most people. She was a member of the 2008 Manchester, NH slam team and a member of the 2010 Hampshire County slam team. Amongst the ways to her heart are wombats, avocados, and really good line breaks.

Mckendy Fils-Aime is a performance poet out of Manchester, NH. He has been a member of the 2008 Manchester NH slam team, the 2009 Worcester Poet’s Asylum slam team, and the 2010 Manchester NH slam team. He has a somewhat religious relationship with most sweets and pastries.

Emily O’Neill is a person and poet from New Jersey. (You are going to apologize for that a lot more than she is.) She has been slamming since age 17, and has been a member of the 2009 Hampshire College CUPSI team and the 2010 Hampshire County NPS team. She DJ’s living room dance parties, swims in books, and cuddles with sharks. In poetry, she enjoys speaking speechless moments and punching you in the ear as a pick-up line.

Sam Teitel has been a member of two national slam teams, Manchester, NH in 2008 and Portland, ME in 2009. In 2010 he was the assistant coach for the 2010 Manchester team. He graduated from Hampshire College with a thesis called "Poetry. Performance. Punk Rock." He is currently living in Somerville, MA and acting as a host and a heart breaker at the Slam Free Or Die reading in Manchester. He likes coffee, old paperbacks, cartoons, The Clash, and New Orleans.

auditions for Art in motion

Auditions: Art In Motion – April 15th

Insurgo Stage Project seeks dancers, musicians, poets and visual artists for the newest installment of Art In Motion – a collaborative multidisciplinary performance series in Jersey City.
All ensemble members will be expected to contribute to the creative process and development of the show. Therefore, a collaborative spirit, team-player attitude, and commitment to rehearsals is very important. All ensemble members must be available the weekend of April 15th for performances.
Dancers should have strong technique in modern and experience with improvisation and partnering. Acting and choreographic experience a major plus. Dancers should come ready to move, and may elect to prepare a short (30 second) solo of their own creation, but this is entirely optional.
Poets should have performance experience and a talent for connecting with the audience. Poets should come to the audition with several writing samples, prepared to perform (doesn’t have to be memorized – we want to see what you think your best work is).
Musicians should be comfortable with improvisation, able to create on the spot, and posses stylistic flexibility and dynamics. Musicians should bring their instrument of choice to the audition.
Visual Artists should be able to focus their work on being interactive, relative, and communicative with the other mediums. Artists should also be willing to be performative about their art. Experience/willingness to create live work during a performance is a plus.
Auditions are January 19th @ 9pm – 11pm at the Grassroots Community Space, 54 Coles St, Jersey City, NJ.
Please bring resume (headshot if applicable) and come ready to create! The audition will be an open rehearsal with all artists, and will consist of various improvisational exercises and short assignments.
Please email avianna@insurgo.org to register for the audition.
Call Backs will be January 20th @ 9-11pm.

Art Eat Up, funding event for artists

Pro Arts Announces it's third Art Eat Up on
Friday, January 14th, 7-10pm
Grace Church Van Vorst
39 Erie Street, Jersey City, NJ

homepagebanner.jpg

What is Art Eat Up?
Art Eat-Up is a food, drink and entertainment event with a twist; for a small donation, guests eat a delicious meal, enjoy good company and musical entertainment, and vote for the most worthy art proposal on the menu that night. All profits collected go to the winning artists to realize their project, which will be displayed at the next Art Eat-Up event. It is a great way to network, meet new people, have fun and provide support for a local art project. Art Eat-Up provides individual grants for artists, connects artists to each other and to the greater community and promotes the artistic livelihood of our community.
Here's some more info.:

~Art Eat-Up is grassroots funding at its best: donations for the community dinner go directly to funding art-makers whose proposals draw the most votes from the diners. The process is purposely simple: Anyone can submit a proposal to Art Eat-Up. Community participation in the grant selection process is the key: through this process we hope to stimulate and support experimental, critical and imaginative projects that may not be eligible for formal funding.
~Art Eat-Up connects artists with artists, artists with the community, and the community with each other during Art Eat-Up dinners. It provides artists the opportunity to begin marketing their work before it is made. It creates momentum and awareness for art projects promoted during the event and possibly realized with the help of the Art-Eat-Up grant.
