A Hard Day's Night

The Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre (54 Journal Square): Sat, Apr 24, 2010 6:00 pm

Starring The Beatles, Wilfrid Brambell, Norman Rossington.
Directed by Richard Lester.
(1964, 85min., B&W.)

The wild, all-encompassing popularity of The Beatles that exploded across America in late 1963 and '64 changed virtually everything about music and pop culture. A Hard Day's Night was a first attempt to channel some of The Beatles' popularity toward movie theatre box offices. Remarkably, though the production was decidedly rushed, Director Lester and screenwriter Alun Owen created a musical-comedy-fantasy that managed to perfectly capture the good-naturedly sardonic personas of each of The Beatles while fairly accurately depicting the manic zaniness of the early Beatlemania. The Beatles themselves were very pleased with the results. Of course, the soundtrack rings with some of the Fab Four's most popular early songs, including "Can't Buy Me Love," "And I Love Her," "I Should Have Known Better," and the title tune, which was reportedly written overnight by John Lennon and Paul McCartney in response to a plea from the director for a song to match the movie's title.

A Hard Day's Night remains a great treat for everyone who loves The Beatles and a great way for new fans to get to know the group and its music.

Skyscraper

Liberty Science Center (222 Jersey City Boulevard): Current Exhibit: A spectacular view of the world

Skyscraper! provides an unprecedented look at the planning, design, engineering and technology of these amazing structures – and their impact on human culture, the environment and even local weather patterns.

Whether you’re bravely walking a steel girder high above the exhibit floor, facing down jet-powered hurricane force winds to test a building design, or taking a quiet moment to reflect on the destruction of the World Trade Center, you’ll leave Skyscraper! with a new appreciation – and completely altered view – of the impressive skyline that surrounds us.

Soaring Structures

One may explore a cityscape that features large-scale images and information about the world’s most intriguing skyscrapers. Some are up to 30 feet tall!

Wind Tunnel

There is much to learn and explore at LSC. Find out about how wind tunnels are created with tall structures. In this exhibit one can change the wind speed, alter building models and see what happens when hurricanes blow. Weekday Hours: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Walk the Steel

Step out on a narrow steel beam 18 feet in the air and walk high above the gallery floor. There is no net, but like all construction workers in dangerous settings, you’ll wear a safety harness. Click here for height and weight restrictions and clothing guidelines. Weekday Hours: 10:00 am - 12:30 pm and 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

the virgin spring, sunday night film forums at JC art school

Sunday Night Film Forums @ JC art school(326 5th street)
ANNOUNCES: A Screening of The Virgin Spring

It’s classic night as Sunday Night Film Forums @ JCAS explores a masterpiece of violence, revenge, and redemption with Ingmar Bergman’s 1960 Best Foreign Film Oscar winner, The Virgin Spring.

Set in medieval Sweden, The Virgin Spring is the disturbing tale of a feudal landowner’s daughter brutally raped and murdered on the road to church. What form will fate take when the traveling killers unknowingly seek food and shelter in their victim’s home? Shocking for its day, The Virgin Spring was banned in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1962, and served as the inspiration for Wes Craven’s 1972 directorial debut The Last House on the Left.

Come experience a controversial classic.

a deeper dive into digital photography

may 8 - 9, 12 - 3 pm, 326 5th street
JCAS is proud to host Haley Jane Samuelson to discuss her photography and the craft of digital photography. Seductive, storybook, and theatrical, Samuelson stages dreamy scenes, shooting them digitally. She masterfully alters some images to add an otherworldly overlay that seems to literally bring dreams to life. Her work points to Cindy Sherman and Sally Mann, yet retains a unique personality and essence.

This lecture is a precursor to a Digital Photography Workshop Samuelson is teaching at JCAS on May 1&2:

--A comprehensive overview of digital cameras and their capabilities

--Get hands-on techniques on how to take a great photograph

--Learn about color space, white balance, the in camera light meter, and the differences and advantage of shooting in various file formats
