the trojan women

directed by Anderson Johnson
West Side Theater, Jersey City University

The Trojan Women was the third tragedy of a trilogy of dealing with the Trojan War. The first tragedy, Alexandros, was about the recognition of the Trojan prince Paris who had been abandoned in infancy by his parents and rediscovered in adulthood. The second tragedy, Palamedes, dealt with Greek mistreatment of their fellow Greek Palamedes. This trilogy was presented at the Dionysia along with the comedic satyr play Sisyphos. The plots of this trilogy were not connected in the way that Aeschylus' Oresteia was connected. Euripides did not favor such connected trilogies.
Euripides did not win the drama competition at the Dionysia festival with this trilogy in 415 BC, and was beaten by the playwright Xenocles.
The four Trojan women of the play are the same that appear in the final chapter of the Iliad lamenting over the corpse of Hector. Taking place near the same time is Hecuba, another play by Euripides.

ASC Lab
Macbeth
By William Shakespeare
Play Master: Bethany Reeves

Tuesday, June 15 through Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 7:30 pm

Macbeth stands alone among Shakespeare’s plays in its savage articulation of human evil. Goaded on by a ruthless wife and the diabolic forces she conjures, Macbeth forsakes honor to pursue a destructive path. This Lab features five actors digging into this darkest of plays in a project loosely modeled on the Lab’s prior small-cast Romeo & Juliet.

All free events will take place at:

Diabetes: a deeper look, exhibit at Liberty Science Center

Diabetes: A Deeper Look
Limited Engagement! April 1 - May 16

This new traveling exhibit helps guests understand diabetes, treatment options, and the role insulin plays in the body. The 2,500-square-foot exhibit resembles a walk-through blood vessel, and visitors enter through a giant cell structure that demonstrates insulin’s role in getting glucose (sugar) energy to cells. Hands-on interactive exhibits and displays explain the role of insulin; how people can be affected by diabetes; the importance of diet and exercise for type 2 diabetes; medications used to help control blood sugar levels; and ongoing research to help treat diabetes. The exhibit will kick off its three-year national tour beginning at Liberty Science Center.

Diabetes: A Deeper Look was developed by the Detroit Science Center and is made possible with support from sanofi-aventis U.S.

one world one sky with Ernie, Liberty Science Center

One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure begins on Sesame Street when Elmo's friend, Hu Hu Zhu, visits from China. Big Bird, Elmo and Hu Hu Zhu take viewers on an exciting discovery of the sun, moon, and stars. They also learn about the Big Dipper and the North Star. Elmo and Hu Hu Zhu then take an imaginary trip to the Moon where they learn that the Moon is a very different place from the Earth. When they imagine themselves back on Earth, they celebrate the idea that even though they live in two different countries, they still share the same sky. They even pick the North Star as their friendship star to always remind them of their shared joy of looking up at the sky together. Jersey City BIKE Tour - May 23rd

We are hosting the first ever Jersey City Ward Tour on May 23. This ten-mile ride will pass through five of the six wards of the city (and touch wheels very close to the sixth) and will start and finish at Exchange Place, 11 am to 1 pm. At the finish there will be a bike rodeo for kids, sponsored by the Jersey City Police Department; a BMX demo, run by Grove Street Bicycles; music, excellent food for sale, and tables for local nonprofits and civic groups to present themselves.

The Ward Tour will cap off a week of events for Bike to Work Week in Jersey City. We want to promote the Ward Tour as effectively as possible, through cards, flyers, posters, the web site, web initiatives, and word of mouth. We hope you can help with the last item, simply by keeping tabs on the day and talking it up to friends and colleagues. We also hope you may be able to help more concretely, by thinking of any potential sponsors whose donation would help defray printing and insurance costs. (We are not yet 501c3 so the donations are not tax-deductible, but any funder gets its name displayed on our Ward Tour promotions/in various media.)

Please email fundraising@bikejc.org if you have suggestions for local businesses to contact (other than Grove Street Bicycles and
EasyRiders, who are already involved)--or run a local business yourself and want to be involved.

In any event, please note the day on the calendars so you can join us on the ride. All participants will need to sign up first, and we will be posting a registration page on the web site soon.

spring benefit and silent auction LCCS

For Learning Community Charter School, the spring benefit gala and silent auction will be held
at The Beacon, Fri april 16, 6 - 8 pm.
LCCS is a unique and dynamic educational institution that is building strong academic success for hundreds of Jersey City children each year. In 1997, Learning Community was one of the state's first charter schools. Since then it has become the model of charter school success.

LCCS students are able to reach these impressive academic goals despite receiving less than 60% of funding traditional Jersey City districts receive.

Our overall budget was cut more than $700,000 last year.

The good news is that the William E. Simon Foundation is offering LCCS a grant that will match every dollar raised at the Gala and other fundraisers up to $250,000. So far, the school has raised $130,000 to meet this goal, from bake sales to bowl-a-thons. The Gala is one of the key ways we can do this.
